The night before launching this company, some doubt crept in on if this was ever going to work.
Then, I watched my father, one of the smartest people I know, struggle checking his email on his phone.
I watched his younger wife get frustrated with him and say “you just do this, this, and that.”
I watched him get frustrated. I then heard through our conversations the rest of the night him continue to put himself and his capabilities with technology down.
“I’m terrible at this.”
“I could never switch careers at this age,
I couldn’t use the technology.”
“I can’t do that.”
Ten minutes later, I had walked
my father through the issue.
Now, he understood how
to fix the issue in the future.
Then, I suggested to him that moving him to a more modern email application would eliminate the issue completely.
He expressed his concern for missing important emails as he had been using it for 20 years.
I showed him how he could forward all incoming emails to his new email address, so that he would never miss a thing, but still get to use the more efficient app. I explained that moving forward we could do a gradual transition of everything to the new email.
No pressure. No belittling. No forcing the new technology onto him. Just patience, guidance, help, and showing him the ease and benefits of a more modern email system.
The next morning, he couldn’t wait
to show people what he had learned.
